English nurse Edith Cavell (Anna Neagle) is matron in a small private hospital in German-occupied Brussels during WWI.
When the son of a recently deceased patient (George Sanders) escapes from a German prisoner-of-war camp, Cavell aids him to reach Holland and safety.
This leads to Cavell, a local noblewoman (Edna May Oliver), the grandmother of the escaped prisoner-of-war, and others to form an organization to help Belgian, French, English and other soldiers escape as well.
Eventually the Germans become aware of what's happening and take action.

wonderful movie, HORRIBLE video quality
...apppears to be a third or fourth genration copy of a video tape, or perhaps of a camera placed in front of an old television set. It's really disrespectful of this great woman.
Fellow, below, says E.C. was executed because she was involved with food shipments to Germany. What the! If true, the Germans might have rewarded (vs killed) her, no?

Something Missing
Although the movie generally follows the narrative that we have been fed for most of the past hundred years there is the issue of the Commission for Belgium Relief(CBR) wherein the food supplies were being diverted to Germany to ensure the continuation of the war. Edith Cavell's knowledge of this manipulation was most likely the true cause for her execution.

A Better Print Please
Can a better print of this outstanding film be uploaded as both the DIVX and the MP4 prints are so bad that one cannot even view the faces of the actors.
Such a great film that has to be viewed without the expressions of Anna Neagle, Edna May Oliver ....
The movie is amongst the best of the period and Anna Neagle as always is great to watch and the direction also flawless with a little bit of British patriotism added on to boost the war effort in America (forgivable as it was period specific).
The rendering of the true story of the brave English nurse in WW1 Brussels sticks closely with the book and the viewer is never bored.
Only wish that a better print is available to first time viewers.
